Steve Smith

Steve Smith is a principal in the Dewey Square Group's coalition building and campaign management area and has more than 25 years of experience in labor, government relations and campaign management.

For five years before joining Dewey Square, Smith served in the Cabinet of Governor Gray Davis, first as the Director for the Department of Industrial Relations and then as California's first Secretary of Labor. Smith oversaw California's programs of Workers compensation, OSHA, Unemployment Insurance, Workforce Investment and Labor Standards Enforcement.

Smith's prior positions include Government Relations Director for the California State Employees Association, the Political Director for the California Democratic Party and the Community Relations Director for the California Hospitals Association. Smith also lobbied for the California State Council of Service Employees.

Smith is a specialist in coalition building and campaign management having managed a statewide race in every election cycle since 1990 except when serving in the Governor's Cabinet.
