Townsend and Carvalho both bring local government experience to benefit the firm’s clients

WASHINGTON, DC— The Dewey Square Group, a national public affairs firm, announced today Shawn Townsend and Jonathan Carvalho have joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. practice. Townsend and Carvalho come to Dewey Square from leadership roles in mayoral offices in Washington, D.C. and New Bedford, MA, respectively. Together, they bring their years of experience in the public sector to addressing the issues of Dewey Square’s diverse group of clients.

Shawn Townsend has joined the firm’s State and Local Affairs and Multicultural Strategies team after serving under D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser as the District’s Director of Nightlife and Culture. “I am excited to use the existing relationships and skills I have gained over the course of my tenure in the mayor’s office to my new role at Dewey Square Group,” Townsend said. With over a decade of public service, Townsend brings unmatched experience working with businesses, local government, and community groups to his new position at Dewey Square Group.

Also adding mayoral administration experience to Dewey Square is Jonathan Carvalho, who joined the firm’s Communications practice and will work in both the Boston and DC offices. Carvalho previously worked as deputy chief of staff and press secretary to Mayor Jon Mitchell of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and brings media relations experience and strategic expertise to his new role. “Working in city government, especially managing crises like the pandemic, taught me the importance of thinking creatively about how best to get information to people who need it the most,” Carvalho said.

“Dewey Square is only as strong as its people, and the addition of Shawn Townsend and Jonathan Carvalho will help us be even strong and more effective in serving our clients,” commented Charlie Baker, Dewey Square Group’s President and Co-founder. “We are delighted to have them on board and look forward integrating them in our work in DC.”
