A Principal in Dewey Square’s Washington, DC office, Shawn Townsend is a veteran communicator with an expertise in building public-private partnerships. As a member of the firm’s State and Local Affairs and Multicultural Strategies practice, Shawn engages with clients to provide strategic guidance and develop outreach and awareness campaigns to effectively address their state and local public policy issues.
Prior to DSG, Shawn spent more than a decade employed with the District of Columbia Government. In 2018, Shawn was appointed by Mayor Muriel Bowser as the inaugural Director of the newly created Mayor’s Office of Nightlife and Culture where he advised the Bowser Administration on the night-time economy and was a conduit to the business community resolving challenges and identifying engagement opportunities.
Shawn was integral in developing Washington D.C.’s strategic engagement plan for the hospitality industry, both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. In February 2020, Shawn oversaw the first economic impact study of Washington D.C.’s nightlife industry. Shawn was instrumental in facilitating COVID-19 relief for restaurants, small businesses, and nightlife establishments and oversaw grant opportunities for entities most impacted by the pandemic.
Shawn received his bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He currently resides in the District of Columbia.
